01Work out how water would reach your house
The right defenses depend on where the water comes from. A house on a hillside can still flood from a backed-up sewer line, and a house far from any river can still take on water from runoff in a hard rain.
River flooding
Rivers and streams rise over hours or days after prolonged rain or snowmelt. You usually get some warning, so a plan and a go-bag pay off.
Flash floods
Intense rain can turn dry creeks, low roads, and underpasses into torrents in minutes. Burn scars and steep terrain make this worse.
Surface runoff
When rain falls faster than the ground and drains can take it, water pools against foundations and pours down driveways toward garages.
Sewer backup
Overloaded municipal lines can push water up through floor drains and basement fixtures. This is often excluded from homeowners policies unless you add a rider.
02Block water at doors, garages, and the foundation
Temporary barriers work best against shallow water — a few inches to around a foot or two, depending on the product. They buy time and keep out runoff; they aren't a substitute for elevation or flood insurance in a high-risk area.
| Option | Best for | Setup | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water-activated flood bags | Gaps, low spots, and backing up other barriers | Minutes once soaked | Light to store; mostly single-use |
| Doorway compression barrier | Standard entry doors | Minutes, no tools | Reusable; measure your door width first |
| Aluminum panel barrier | Doors and garage openings | Minutes once brackets are installed | Sturdier option for repeated events |
| Garage door barrier | Runoff flowing down a driveway | Varies by product | Good for chronic driveway runoff |
| Foundation flood vents | Crawlspaces and enclosed areas below flood level | Permanent install | Let water flow through to relieve pressure on walls |

Most basement water comes from groundwater, gutters dumping too close to the house, or sewer lines backing up — and the worst of it tends to arrive during storms that also knock out power.
- Fix gutters and grading first
Extend downspouts several feet from the foundation and make sure soil slopes away from the house. It's cheap and often solves minor seepage on its own.
- Test your sump pump each spring
Run water into the pit until the float rises, and check that the pump starts and empties it. Replace pumps that are noisy, slow, or getting old.
- Add a battery backup
A backup pump takes over when the power goes out or the main pump fails, which is when you need it most.
- Stop backflow at floor drains
A backflow preventer in the floor drain can help keep sewer water from coming up into the basement. For a main-line backwater valve, call a plumber.
- Put sensors where water shows up first
Cheap leak alarms near the sump pit, water heater, and lowest corner give you an early warning while there's still time to act.

- WatchGet ready to move fast.
Charge phones, fill the car's tank, move valuables and documents upstairs, and stage barriers by the doors.
- WarningProtect the house, then yourself.
Set out barriers, bring in outdoor items that could float away, and be ready to leave if officials tell you to.
- Water risingCut power only if it's safe.
If you can reach the main breaker while standing somewhere dry, shut it off. Never touch electrical equipment while standing in water.
- EvacuationLeave early, by a known route.
Go to higher ground and avoid creeks and low underpasses. Take medications, documents, chargers, and pets.
05Coming home and drying out safely
The cleanup carries its own risks — electrical hazards, contaminated water, and mold that can start growing quickly. Go slowly and document everything before you throw it away.
- Return only when officials say it's safe, and in daylight
- Have an electrician check the system before turning power back on if water reached outlets or the panel
- Photograph and video all damage and damaged items before removing anything
- Wear rubber boots, gloves, and eye protection; treat floodwater as contaminated
- Throw out food, medicine, and baby items that touched floodwater
- Open up the house and start drying within 24–48 hours to limit mold growth
- Remove soaked drywall, insulation, and carpet that can't be dried quickly
- Have private wells tested before drinking from them again
